Russian forces are continuing their all-out assault on Ukraine, which is a catastrophic and needless humanitarian crisis that isn't likely to end soon.

The invasion of several Ukrainian cities can be seen from space, in a shocking reminder of the devastating scale of the ongoing war.

The European Space Agency (ESA) astronaut, who recently completed his 177 day stint on the space station, told German broadcasters that he felt far away at first.

He said that the invasion was visible to the naked eye from space, and that he could see huge black columns of smoke over Mariupol, a port city that has been leveled by Russian forces.

Where There's Smoke

The earliest signs of the conflict were spotted by Maurer.

The whole country went dark at the beginning of the war, he said.

The first days of the war were marked by the impacts. Even when individual rockets made impact with their targets, you could see lightning at night.

Business as Usual

Despite Russia's ongoing presence on the International Space Station, Maurer argued that all crew members agreed quickly on the fact that terrible things are happening in Ukraine.

It is hard to comprehend what it is like to live in the confines of the space station with Russian forces.

According to other first hand accounts, things have remained peaceful and civilized so far, with the only notable difference being the occasional awkward conversation.

War is hard to watch from hundreds of miles above the Earth.

The war seen from above is more irrational than from the ground.

There was a rumor that the NASA Astronaut was being abandoned in space by his wife.
