Do you think you need it? Is there a need for speed? It has been nearly four decades since Top Gun uttered that phrase. Tom Cruise will reprise his role as Captain Pete in Top Gun: Maverick later this week. In the sequel, Maverick is training a new generation of Top Gun pilots. The new group of actors needed to be taught how to portray elite pilots. In a new film, Cruise insisted that the new performers learn how to fly.

The cast went through a lot of training for the film. The training included a simulation of an underwater rescue. The actors were taught how to fly their own planes in stages, and how to handle movement and spatial awareness inside the cockpit. Cruise and company took it a step further. The actors were filming their in-cockpit footage for the movie while flying their planes. That's the kind of thing they don't teach you in film school.

The official synopsis for the film is provided by Paramount Pictures.
