A new UK visa aimed at attracting the best graduates from across the world could exclude talent from African countries, scientists and policy-makers warn.

The High Potential Individual visa will be launched by the UK Home Office on 30 May and will be for people who have graduated from one of the world's top universities in the past five years.

People with a recent undergraduate degree or PhD from one of these universities will be able to move to the UK for up to three years without having a job lined up. Foreign researchers in the UK need a job offer, a fellowship, or a notable prize-winner in order to get a UK visa.

The Home Office has compiled a list of foreign universities that it considers to be the best in the world.
