An Iraqi citizen living in Ohio was arrested Tuesday and charged with participating in a plot to assassinate former President George W. Bush.
According to the DOJ, Shihab Shihab of Columbus planned to bring four Iraqi nationals into the United States to assassinate Bush in order to avenge the deaths of Iraqis during the 2003 U.S.-led invasion of the country.
The four Iraqi nationals were supposed to be smuggled out of the country through the U.S.-Mexico border.
The DOJ said in a press release that Shihab traveled to Dallas in February to research locations associated with Bush and that he met with other people at a hotel in Columbus to look at firearms and law enforcement uniforms.
The department claimed that Shihab agreed to bring a different Iraqi citizen into the U.S. for $40,000 in a fake people-smuggling operation that was actually set up by the FBI.
An attorney for Shihab didn't respond to a request for comment.
Shihab entered the U.S. on a visitor visa in 2020 and applied for citizenship in 2021, the DOJ said.
If he is convicted, Shihab could face up to 20 years in prison for attempting to illegally bring an individual into the U.S. and aiding and abetting the attempted murder of a former U.S. official.
According to an article by Forbes, the Islamic State was planning to assassinate George W. Bush in Dallas.
