There is a catch to Delta's award sale to Australia, which is low pricing and wide open award availability for economy class.
Delta's award pricing to Australia can be very high. If you want to travel in December, some dates are more expensive than others.
The award sale is better at 60,000 SkyMiles. The pricing is only available when flying from Los Angeles to Australia. The availability for at least 8 people in September is shown here.
It will cost you a little more if you need to fly elsewhere in the US. There are many airports that are available from 80,000 SkyMiles round trip.
Although the pricing is good, the key thing to be aware of is that you will be flying in economy class. A 15 hour flight to Sydney and a 13 hour flight back is a long time in economy. The best sleep I have ever gotten on a flight was when we flew economy from the US to Australia on Virgin Australia, so it can be done. We were able to take advantage of the recent United award sale for business class for our trip to Australia next year.
There is no idea how long this award pricing will last with these Delta award sales. If the sale gets pulled sooner than later, it would be best to book immediately.
