Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny blasted Russian President Vladimir Putin's invasion into Ukraine on Tuesday, saying the war is built entirely on lies.

According to multiple news outlets, a Russian court ruled that Navalny's sentence would take effect immediately, meaning he would be sent to a high-security penal colony with harsh conditions and few family visits.

According to an Agence France-Presse translation, Navalny said the trial was meaningless and that the system and Putin were traitors.

Navalny was sentenced in March to nine years in prison after he was convicted of fraud and contempt of court.

The Kremlin critic, who was poisoned with a Soviet-era nerve agent while traveling in Siberia in 2020, was held in a prison outside of Moscow for a year for violating his parole while he was in a coma. He spent four months in a Berlin hospital after he was flown there, but was immediately arrested upon his arrival in Russia. The Secretary of State called Navalny's two-year sentence politically motivated in February, after Navalny and his supporters claimed that Putin ordered him to be poisoned.

Kira Yarmysh, Navalny's press secretary, said in a statement that the nine years of strict regime is not his final sentence.
