The Ukrainian authorities said on Tuesday that more than 200 bodies had been found in Mariupol, though the United Nations believes the actual death toll is much higher.

Petro Andryushchenko, an advisor to the city's mayor, told the Associated Press that the bodies were found in the basement of the collapsed apartment building.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in a speech on the eve of the three-month anniversary that one of the deadliest missile strikes in the war had left 87 dead.

Zelensky said that the Russian army has carried out 1,474 missile strikes on Ukraine with 2,275 separate missiles.

He said that Russia has launched more than 3000 air strikes.

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights estimated Monday a total of 3,930 civilians have been killed and more than 4,500 have been injured in Ukraine, with most dying from shelling, missile and air strikes.

The occupiers are fighting a very brutal war against us. Zelensky said in a nightly address on May 23 that there has been no such war on the European continent for 77 years.

What We Don’t Know

Ukrainian civilians and Russian soldiers have accurate death tolls. The Defense Ministry said at the end of March that 1,351 soldiers had been killed in the conflict. The ability to carry out accurate estimates has been hampered by the fighting.

At least 15,000. The U.K. Defense Ministry estimated on Monday how many Russian troops have been killed in the first three months of war, the same number of Soviet soldiers who have been killed in combat in Afghanistan.

Key Background

Tens of thousands of Russians and Ukrainians have died as a result of the war. At least 10,000 people have died in Mariupol alone, according to the city's mayor. Russia's military deaths are likely to surpass those of Ukraine. In April, Zelensky told CNN that between 2,500 and 3000 Ukrainian soldiers had died, which is more accurate than the number of Ukrainian troops that Russia claimed to have killed in March. Zelensky said as many as 100 soldiers may be dying every day in the conflict in eastern Ukraine. Zelensky said that the war in eastern Ukraine was entering its fourth month and that Russian troops were trying to attack two cities.

There are 200 bodies found in Mariupol.

Up to 15,000 Russians have died in Ukraine.

Estimates show that Russian troops have been hit harder in the war.
