It used to be a big deal to have a camera with 8 megapixels on it. It used to be very impressive. I think 100 MP phones arrived too.

Is anyone really interested in 200 megapixels? That's what the company seems to be banking on with its upcoming flagship phones.

The general manager of the company posted an image of a phone on Weibo. The post didn't reveal much about the device beyond the July release date, but a separate post teased a foldable device with the new chip.

It's clear that 200 megapixels on a phone is too much. Even the most expensive professional cameras in the world don't achieve high resolution.

The H6D-400C, a $47,000 camera, can reach 400MIPs by combining multiple images into one, but its actual sensor is only 100MIPs. Phase One's XT IQ4 has the highest native sensor resolution available in a prosumer camera, and it retails for $57,000.

If the pros don't need that kind of resolution in their cameras, you don't need it on your phone. 4K is a measly 8.3 megapixels, while 8K is only 33.2.

There are benefits to that kind of detail. High-resolution phones rarely end up with high-resolution photos. Instead, they combine multiple pixels in a process that can improve the low-light performance, dynamic range, and color rendering of a photo. You will likely end up with a 12-ish-MPI photo instead of a 200-MPI photo.

High-resolution sensors are an easy way to allow people to zoom into scenes without a large telephoto lens.

There are problems with using a high-resolution sensor. If images are being saved at a higher resolution, it requires more processing power and storage. Even with binned images, the image quality benefits are not much different from using a lower-resolution sensor.

It is unlikely that a high resolution will make a difference in image quality.

It's not possible to resolve that much detail with the lens in the phone. It's not possible for a professional camera lens to resolve that kind of resolution.

We have consistently seen that image processing is more important than the latest camera hardware. Some of the best photos were produced by the Pixel phones, which were using outdated hardware.

It sounds better if you have 200 and 50 megapixels. It is 200MIPs.

We have known for a while that 200 megapixel phones were coming. It's likely that the upcoming phone from Motorola is using the HP1 sensor.

It has taken a long time for the sensor to become available. Even though it doesn't need the latest and greatest hardware to achieve great photos, even though it isn't expected to use this sensor until next year's S23.

Most of the time, image quality has nothing to do with resolution. The phones that are usually considered to have the best cameras have rarely been the ones with the highest resolution sensors. The company is hoping that it pays more attention to image processing than it does to numbers on a spec sheet.
