Donaldson claimed his intent was not racist and that he was referencing an interview Anderson gave in 2019:
Lindsey Adler @lindseyadlerThis is the quote from Tim Anderson that Josh Donaldson referenced today. He said it to Sports Illustrated in 2019. Josh Donaldson said that in the past, and and Tim Anderson had joked about it. pic.twitter.com/kMaSopsNaC
Lindsey Adler @lindseyadlerJosh Donaldson on calling Tim Anderson “Jackie” today: “Obviously, he deemed that it was disrespectful. And look, if he did, I apologize. Like that's not what I was trying to do by any manner.”
Donaldson says he hadn’t spoken with Anderson, said he would be open to it.
Even if Donaldson thought it was a joke, his comments were not appropriate or offensive.
Joon Lee @joonlee“I’ve said this in years past” doesn’t excuse DonaldsonAnyone who’s been the target of name calling has heard the same things over and over. Sometimes you respond, sometimes you don’t.Donaldson doesn’t get to decide if it’s a joke today or yesterday
Anderson does https://t.co/h8SSfmI2y3
Herb Lawrence @Ecnerwal23To all the people twisting themselves into pretzels to defend Josh Donaldson, stop and just listen. Your opinion of this doesn’t matter. I know that’s hard for you to hear but it’s true whether you believe it or not. Tim is telling you how HE took Donaldson’s words https://t.co/SZoUyJJBhx
Major League Baseball had a stance on the situation and it was that the remarks were inappropriate.
Donaldson and Anderson exchanged words this season after the former pushed the latter off third base during a close play at the bag.
Donaldson has a history with the White Sox. While he was with the Minnesota Twins, he hit a home run off Lucas Giolito and rubbed his hands together as he crossed home plate.
Donaldson said that he didn't see any swings and misses on the pitches where he normally gets swings and misses. That is where you get the hopping effect from the spin rate.
Giolito called Donaldson apest and said his actions as he crossed home plate were classless.
Donaldson confronted Giolito in the parking lot after the game.
