The Washington Commanders have purchased around 200 acres of land in Virginia for more than $100 million, which could be used for a new stadium, according to John Keim.

Keim said that the Commanders purchased the land last week, which is their preferred location for a new stadium.

The Commanders like the site because it has enough space for other developments around the stadium, such as restaurants, bars, retail shops and an amphitheater.

The translucent roof and facade of the new stadium can change colors, according to Keim.

The Commanders have played at FedEx Field since 1997. Their contract to play there ends in 2026. Virginia is trying to lure the team out of Maryland.

A $400 million plan to develop the area around FedEx Field was approved by the Maryland House. Maryland Governor Larry Hogan said in March that the state wouldn't get into a bidding war with Virginia or the District of Columbia to keep the team.

The Commanders have been using everyone back and forth for eight years. Hogan said that they were not going to propose a price of over $1 billion for them to build. If Virginia wants to do that and they want to go to Virginia, I would say good luck.

Keim said that the Commanders are interested in returning to the RFK Stadium site. It is difficult to pursue because it is on federal land. Washington played there from 1961-96.

The purchase of land in Virginia by the Commanders comes as the team and owner are being investigated by Congress. There are allegations of sexual assault against the organization.

The Jacksonville Jaguars will be the first team the Commanders will play at home in the future.
