South Korea's new president says a softer approach to North Korea 'has proven to be a failure'

The president of South Korea argued that it is not enough to appease the North Korean leader.

The approach of escaping temporarily North Korean provocation or conflict has proven to be a failure over the past five years.

In March, a more progressive rival was defeated by a conservative. Kim was one of the main messages that Yoon made in his bid to replace Moon. Moon favored taking historic steps toward reunifying the Korean Peninsula, including having the two nations march under one flag at the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympic Games.

Kim's regime has done little to change its behavior. According to CNN, North Korea has launched 15 missiles this year. It is said to have taken steps to resume underground nuclear testing.

Trump tried to broker a historic deal with Kim, attending a historic summit in Singapore and later briefly crossing into North Korean territory. He walked away from the talks.

President Joe Biden is making his first trip to Asia as president. The US and South Korea are going to resume military exercises that were paused as the Trump administration pursued talks with the north.
