The last public payphone booth in New York is no longer open. It was the last of its kind and was removed from Midtown Manhattan on Monday. No one will be asking for a dime to make a phone call anymore. The New York City public payphone era is over. There are still 4 full-length so-called "Superman booths" in Manhattan's Upper West Side, which are basically museum pieces. In 2015, the city took thousands of payphones off the streets and switched them to public wi-fi. The free wi-fi allows people to use it for many things, including free phone calls, access to social services, and the ability to charge many of their devices. The 5G technology will make it very efficient for New Yorkers.
