According to reports, the San Francisco 49ers are still planning to trade Jimmy Garoppolo.

The 49ers and Garoppolo are flexible to find the best situation for the quarterback, who is heading into the final year of his contract, according to Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated.

The 49ers are planning to have a first-round pick as their starter next season.

Garoppolo had surgery to repair an injured capsule in his shoulder, which has kept his status in limbo. He hasn't been able to throw for teams that are interested in his services.

There were a lot of potential Garoppolo suitors. Every team that needed a veteran quarterback in the off season has gotten one.

San Francisco would probably not trade Garoppolo within the division, even though the Carolina and Seattle teams need help at the position. Carolina is Garoppolo's best chance of landing, as the team invested a third-round pick in Matt Corral during the draft and have Sam Darnold already on their roster.

The status of Baker Mayfield, who requested a trade from the Cleveland Browns, has been monitored by the Carolinas. The relationship between the 49ers and Garoppolo is worse than the one between the Browns.

If the Carolinas trade for Garoppolo, they would be paying a combined $43.1 million in base salary for the combo of Garoppolo and Darnold, not the best use of resources in the history of the league. The combined cap hits for the two below average starting quarterbacks would be higher than any single signal-caller this season.

Garoppolo could sign an extension that lowers his cap hit as part of a trade, and the 49ers are willing to allow teams to negotiate with him ahead of any deal. It is becoming increasingly likely that Garoppolo will return to San Francisco in 2022.
