Erik ten Hag speaking at a news conference
Erik ten Hag won three Eredivisie titles in five seasons as Ajax boss before joining Manchester United

The Manchester United job is not going to harm the reputation of the man who is taking it.

Since Sir Alex Ferguson retired, United has had five permanent bosses.

He said that he doesn't see it as a risk.

He said he expected to see goals from the Portugal forward next season.

24 hours after watching his club lose at Crystal Palace on the final day of the season, the new United manager spoke to reporters at his official introduction.

Their points tally of 58 is their lowest since 1990 and comes just a year after they finished second behind Manchester City.

When asked how many players the club needed to bring in over the summer, Ten Hag said he was still analyzing his squad.

The plan is huge and we only have a short time.

I am looking forward to working with these players. The squad was second in the league the year before. I think we can get out more from this season if we improve and work with them.

Ten Hag didn't give any guarantees over Harry being the captain.

He said that he was looking forward to working with the England international next season.

He replied "of course" when asked if the top scorer with 24 goals was part of his plans.

Klopp-Guardiola era 'can come to an end'

It has been nine years since Manchester United last won the title in the premier league, and it has been dominated by Manchester City andLiverpool.

Ten Hag is hoping he can break their hold on the trophy.

He said that he admires them both, but that an era can come to an end.

I look forward to a battle with them and I am sure other clubs will want to do that.

The Dutch man said he sought the advice of his former boss, Louis van Gaal, who had previously suggested that Ten Hag should consider his options carefully before accepting the job.

During his time at Old United, Van Gaal won the FA Cup and said that Ten Hag needed to join a football club.

I will draw my own line even though I have heard the comments. He said that he was confident that it wouldn't be the case.

I talked to the directors about it. Every club these days is commercial and football is one of them. Football is one, two, and three at this club and every club needs it.

'Ten Hag has some breathing space - for now'

Analysis by Simon Stone.

At the press conference where he was introduced, ten Hag shook hands with most of the media and told them he was happy to meet them.

Little details like that are important.

It won't save him from criticism if results don't go the right way, but it will remove the negative mentality that can be an unnecessary negative at the start of a new job.

The English of Ten Hag is decent. It may not be great for the media, but he has learned enough to hide behind wide-ranging statements.

When asked specific questions about how many new players he would need and whether Harry Maguire would remain as captain, Ten Hag was able to refer back to the time when he said he would take a couple of weeks to assess United's squad.

The only certainty is that he wants him. When asked what the Portugal superstar can bring, a question designed to elicit an expansive response about the overall contribution, which has been called into question, Ten Hag instead offered a brief goal.

As he gets used to his new role, it remains to be seen whether he gives any detail. Some managers do and others do not.

He points out that his side at Ajax is an example of what he wants.

He thinks that the current dominance of Manchester City andLiverpool can be ended without the departure of eitherPep Guardiola, or both, because he thinks United can be successful. Since Sir Alex Ferguson retired, it has proved too difficult for other people to take the job, so he insisted he was not risking his reputation by taking it.

It would have been odd if he said otherwise.

There is some breathing space for Ten Hag. He will speak to the media in Thailand before the first pre-season game.

The opponent? The city ofLiverpool.

United gave Ten Hag an easy introduction.
