The first season of Love, Death and Robots was great, but the second season was a letdown. But season 3? It is a return to form for the series. I wanted to rank the episodes from the worst to the best, but by the end, I didn't like any of them. I'm going from great to really great, and the ones at the top may be my favorites over the next three seasons.
You can get through Love, Death and Robots in under two hours, with episodes ranging from 7 to 20 minutes each. Here is my ranking order.
There are 9. We have seen these robots before, and this is based on a John Scalzi story, but I am not sure their dissection of the apocalypse lives up to all the other ones here. The social commentary is a little on the nose, but the others are more memorable.
There are 8. I really liked the dissection of the alien swarm, as well as the motivation of the humans studying it. The last scene is horrifying and great, but it ends quickly for me because I want to see more.
7. I don't have much to criticize about the Night of the Mini-Dead. This is a really funny, really short examination of the zombie apocalypse in miniature form, and it made me want to play a video game version of this, defending against the tiny hordes.
6. Soldiers are forced to face off against a mechanized bear in a hilarious, horrifying short that stars Gabriel Luna and Steve Blum. It's funny. It was gross. It was very good.
5. The horrors of war can be seen through the eyes of rats. This seemed like it was going to be a comedy, but it's actually one of the more horrifying shorts in the series, as rats battle with a violent rat-killing robot set upon them by a farmer. The second most gory short was after Kill Team Kill.
4. The very pulse of the machine is known for their beautiful animation, and this one is an all-timer. After an accident on the surface of the moon, an astronauts finds herself in contact with Jupiter's moon Io. The animation makes the story worth watching again and again.
3. You want some Lovecraft? Here's a little bit of Lovecraft. A squad of soldiers chase and enemy down into a cave system where they uncover an ancient, horrifying evil. The animation is the most realistic this season.
2. I moved this up and down from number one a few times. One of the most memorable shorts I have ever seen from this series is the one about a knight and an old woman fighting for the rights of natives. The animation here is absolutely wild, and despite being almost entirely dialogue free, it is gripping the whole way through. You will not forget this one.
1. It's no surprise that the ultimate victor is David Fincher's short, which has pirates on a ship dealing with a monster inside their hull, which causes them to turn on one another. One of the best of the entire series is Bad travelling, and it is easily the best short here. I would expect nothing less from the man. You can't miss it.
