A person familiar with the matter says that Broadcom is in talks to acquire VMware.
A person who was not authorized to publicly discuss it said on Sunday night that a deal is not final. The terms of any potential deal were not made public.
The company's chief executive, Hock E. Tan, is known for making deals. The chip company moved its headquarters from Singapore to San Jose, Calif., but initially bought other chip companies. The $117 billion deal to buy the U.S. chip maker was blocked by President Donald J. Trump on national security concerns. It bought the software company CA Technologies for $18.9 billion and the security division of Symantec for $10.7 billion in 2019.
VMware, which was spun off from Dell Technologies last November, is known for making software that allows one computer to act like many machines and make computing more efficient. It makes a range of software for data centers.
A spokesman for the company wouldn't comment.
