The J.M. Smucker Company has recalled peanut butter products in the US and Canada due to the possibility of salmonella.

The company encouraged consumers who bought the potentially contaminated products to immediately dispose of them.

The F.D.A. was coordinating a thorough investigation with the Smucker Company.

When you eat a meal that contains a lot of foods, you can get a lot of diseases, like salmonella, which can cause a lot of symptoms. Young children, older people, and people with weakened immune systems are at greater risk of getting the infection.

As of Sunday, the F.D.A. said there were at least 12 cases of salmonella linked to peanut butter. Two people were hospitalized.

The likely cause of illnesses in this outbreak was the Jif brand peanut butter produced at the Smucker Company facility in Kentucky.

Jif brand peanut butter products with lot code numbers 1274425 through 2140425 are affected by the recall. The best-if-used-by date is included with the lot numbers.

The F.D.A. recalls products over cross-contamination with allergens and foreign materials in food.

Hundreds of people across the United States were affected by a salmonella outbreak in October that was linked to imported red, white and yellow onions. 31 people were sick after eating lettuce.
