Ons Jabeur was beaten by Magda Linette in the first round of the French Open.

The Tunisia arrived at the French capital in good shape, but fell to the Pole in a hard fought match.

He reached three clay-court finals in the build-up to Paris, and was one of the favorites for the title.

Linette held her nerve better on the big points to win.

Linette will face either a British or Italian player next.

The first African to win a women's tennis event in Spain was Jabeur, who won 17 clay-court matches in the weeks before the French Open.

She cut a frustrated figure as the match went on.

Linette was in trouble when she was serving at 5-3 down in the opener.

The Pole left the court for treatment on her right thigh, which was heavily strapped, and struggled with her movement at the back of the court.

In the second set, Linette forced a decider after the two missed break-point chances.

Both players broke in the final set, with Linette keeping the pressure on, and Jabeur having to dig deep to save two break points at 4-4.

Linette won the match when the Tunisia double-faulted to hand the match point.

Linette raised her arms in triumph after converting it and winning her third top 10 win of her career.

The runner-up of last year claimed her first victory since March as she fought back to beat Jule.

The American came through the match with a win.

The other players in action on Sunday include a former champion and a runner-up.
