Tiger Woods withdrew from the US PGA Championship after failing to score in the third round.
The 15-time major winner had his third worst round in a major, a nine-over 79, that left him last on 12 over.
He made five consecutive bogeys in a major for the first time as a professional.
Fourteen months after a life-threatening car crash, Tiger Woods returned to competitive golf at the Masters in April.
The severity of Woods' injuries caused him to embark on a long road to recovery and raised questions over whether he would be able to compete again at the highest level.
He shot two 78s in the third and fourth rounds at the Augusta National, his highest scores at the course, as his physical condition deteriorated after he made the cut at the Masters.
After limping after his opening tee shot in the first round, Woods has been undergoing treatment to aid his recovery.
He shot a one-under 69 in the second round to make the halfway cut.
Woods struggled in the cold weather on Saturday after a quick change from his early tee-time.
He bogeyed the second, dropped three more shots on the par-three sixth and then made another six bogeys in seven holes to find himself 10 over for the day.
I didn't play well. Woods said that he didn't hit the ball well.
Jim Richerson, President of the PGA of America, said: "We admire Tiger's effort to compete here at Southern Hills and wish him the best as he continues to recover from his injuries."
The 150th Open Championship will be held at St Andrew's in July.
He has described the Old Course as his favourite golf course in the world.
