As I do every morning, I check FlightAware to see how airline operations are running around the world. Not surprisingly, leading the way in delays and cancelations, were Chinese airlines and airports, due to their continuous lockdowns. It was surprising to see Delta Air Lines near the top. There are 250 canceled flights and 206 delayed. See the picture below.
So I drilled down and clicked Delta on Flight Aware, where you can see which flights are being canceled and it’s not just one airport, although Hartsfield-Jackson in Atlanta, which is the airline’s headquarters, does have the bulk, with 54 of the cancelations. However, New York’s LaGuardia and JFK are showing up with more frequency than others. See partial screenshot below:
I took to social media to see if I could find out what was going on, and I found out that it was not the only travel publisher that had noticed it. Delta has already canceled more than 200 flights today and nearly 10% of its schedule for the day.
Airlines are trying to fly as much as possible this summer. Don't watch out when things go wrong.
Kyle is correct. I'm not sure what the reason is but it's not weather or air traffic control as other airlines aren't having the same high volume of cancelations.
I looked at Delta's feed and saw that their agents were responding to upset customers. Here are a few of the angry messages.
I was on a Delta flight last night. We had to stop in BWI to refill our tanks because we were late. We were at the jet bridge for over an hour. The flight from JFK to PWM was canceled last night. This is not good. Don't fly Delta.
Our trip was canceled a few hours before we left. There was no reason given. What about our vacation? We have to rebook our hotel and rental.
JC is correct. Customers don't have a lot of rights when it comes to getting their money back if a flight is canceled. I wrote a post about whether airlines are obligated to cover your hotel accommodations if your flight is delayed or canceled.
I am afraid that since it is so early in the day, there will be more delays and cancelations. If your flight has been affected, please leave a comment below. Remember not to take out your anger on the gate agents or flight attendants because they have nothing to do with it and they are just as angry.
