The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is urging domestic travelers in the US to test for COVID-19 before and after they travel.

The health agency wants travelers to consider getting tested for current infections by using a test no later than three days before they travel. Millions of Americans are expected to travel for the unofficial start of summer.

There are rising cases in the US. Travelers should check their destination's virus situation before traveling and be up-to-date with their vaccines. Travelers who have symptoms, have tested positive for COVID-19, are waiting for results of a test, or have had close contact with a person with COVID-19 are advised not to travel.

Do domestic travelers have to wear masks?

On April 18, a court order requiring masks on public transportation was scrapped. The CDC recommends that people wear masks in public transportation settings. It won't enforce mask-wearing as a result, but it does recommend that passengers aged two years or older wear a well-fitting mask or respirator in indoor areas of public transportation and transportation hubs, especially in locations that are crowded or poorly ventilated, such as airport jetways.

Why are vaccinated travelers advised to test pre-travel?

Some people who are fully vaccine free will still get the condition because the vaccines are not 100% effective at preventing infections. Travelers who are up-to-date with their vaccines can still get the disease if they don't. A vaccine breakthrough infection is an infection of a fully-vaccinated person.

Why should domestic travelers test after travel?

The CDC recommends that travelers test for current infections with a viral test if they travel in crowded places with a high risk of exposure. They might have been exposed to COVID-19 on their travels, and they can still be exposed to the virus and spread it to others.
