Tiger's spectacular second shot sets him up for birdie, putting him at +3 (0:27)

Tiger Woods put his second shot within feet of the hole for the easy par putt to get him to +3 for the tournament. (0:27)

Tiger Woods will be at the 104th PGA Championship at Southern Hills Country Club.

Needing to avoid a bogey down the stretch to stay on the right side of the cut line, the 15-time major champion did better than that, with a birdie on the 16th hole. He was 3 over through 36 holes after shooting 1-under 69 in the second round.

While Woods isn't positioned on the leader board where he probably wants to be, he's still sticking around for the final 36 holes, which is more than what other stars such as world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler do. Woods has made the cut in 18 of 22 starts.

If you miss the cut, Woods said, you cannot win the tournament. There is a reason why you fight hard and you can give yourself a chance on the weekend. You don't know when you might get hot. I will have to go low this weekend. It is going to be different. The wind is going to come from the north. It is going to be cooler.

Since he was seriously injured in a car accident outside Los Angeles in February of 2021, Woods has only played in two official tour events. He was more engaged on Friday than he was in the first round, when he shot 4-over 70. He played in the morning wave on Thursday and was able to take advantage of a later tee time on Friday.

Woods was asked to describe his level of pain after the round.

Woods was on the right side of the draw in terms of the weather, he didn't have to battle wind gusts up to 25 mph that plagued other players on Friday morning. The wind died down by the time Woods and his playing partners started their round.

Woods fought through pain in his repaired right leg, even though he was limping and grimaced at times. There was a glimpse of the old Tiger. The 16th hole was the third toughest this week. He hit his tee shot in the middle of the fairway and left him 209 yards to the hole. He hit his ball to four feet and it was his best iron shot of the tournament. The ninth hole is a 521-yard hole.

Woods got back on the right side of the cut line by sinking an eight-footer on the 13th after a double-bogey on the 11th. He grimaced after hitting a layup shot. He made a par save on the par 3 14th after a poor chip shot from just off the green.

Even though Woods is 12 shots behind leader Will Zalatoris, he is still holding out hope that he can get back into contention. It would probably take a couple of rounds like what Bubba did on Friday.

Woods said that he was hoping to shoot a number like the one he shot today. I have to get myself there tomorrow and it will be quick. That is the reward for making the cut. I hope I can get it in the next day.

The weather is supposed to be a little more difficult and testy, and hopefully that is the case. Hopefully I can post a good round and move up the board if that is the case. You never know, I am pretty far back. It's hard to win a major championship. We have seen guys with big leads or make big comebacks.

Woods made a 10 foot putt on the 10th hole to move him to 1 under for the round. He pulled his tee shot to the left on the next hole. He couldn't get up and down from eight feet after he knocked his second shot into a greenside Bunker. He was 5 over for the tournament after the double-bogey 5.

He could have gotten worse on the par-4 12th. After hitting his first shot into the fairway, Woods hit his second shot into the same hole. He made a 14-footer to save par after chipping out.
