A new report claims that a subcontractor working for Russia's intelligence service has a botnet that can manipulate trends on social media platforms on a massive scale. The Federal Security Service is one of Russia's primary intelligence agencies.

The report is based on documents and other materials that were stolen from the contractor and leaked by the hacktivist group in March of 2020.

Cybercriminals use botnets to engage in coordinated malicious behavior. They are used by hackers to launch cyberattacks, engage in hacking, and spread bad stuff.

0Day Technologies is alleged to have used a botnet. The Nisos report says that the SANA suite enables the user to form and deploy social media events.

The report says that SANA could engineer what it calls "newsbreaks", or massive coordinated posting efforts around a brand or company.
