The Title 42 migrant policy was put on hold by a federal judge on Friday due to concerns that it would cause a surge in illegal border crossing into the United States.
The injunction was granted by the District Court Judge Robert Summerhays, who was appointed by the Trump administration.
Title 42 was put in place by the Trump Administration in March 2020 because of concerns about the spread of Covid-19.
Critics have decried the policy as a blatant attempt to keep migrants from entering the United States.
The 24 largely red states argued that allowing the order to expire would lead to increased security and health risks.
The record shows that the Termination Order will result in an increase in daily border crossings and that it could be as large as a three-fold increase.
The Biden Administration has stood by its commitment to end Title 42 despite court challenges and some moderate Democrats questioning plans to lift the policy during a historic surge of migrant crossing. In April, over 230,000 migrant arrests were made along the U.S.-Mexico border, more than 13 times the number made in April 2020. Since the start of the Pandemic, border crossings have increased, but started to go up after President Joe Biden took office.
A judge will temporarily block Biden from ending border restrictions.
Biden's plan to end border restrictions was criticized by more Democrats.
