It can feel like you are peeing buckets when you have to go.

How much urine can the human bladder hold?

According to the Institute for Quality and Efficiency in Health Care in Germany, the human bladder can hold up to 2.3 cups of liquid for the average woman and up to 2.9 cups for the average man.

For women, that is 500 liters and for men, 700 liters.

It is rare to actually need to pee that amount of fluid in the bladder. According to the same source, the urge to urinate starts when the bladder fills to 1.5 cups. The average adult excretes an average of 7.2 cups of urine a day.

Some of us shiver when we pee.

The amount of pee the bladder holds can be estimated with a formula in kids over a year of age. The number of years of age is 2 and the number of liters is 30.

The bladder wall is stretched when urine accumulates. According to the National Institute of Health, stretching seems to cause certain muscles to respond to touch and pressure. People who don't have the instructions for these genes don't feel the need to pee or start to urinate, so they pee less often than average.

Trying to reach the restroom without too much delay is one reason. According to the National Institute on Aging, holding in urine on a regular basis can stretch the bladder muscles, making it harder to fully empty the bladder and raise the risk of bladder infections.

The signals from the bladder muscle travel to the spine via two nerves. The University of Michigan Health System says that people can have temporary nerve issues after giving birth, which can make it hard to go to the bathroom.

In infants and children who aren't potty-trained, the feeling of bladder fullness can cause the muscular ring that keeps the bladder sealed to relax. Control over urination develops as the muscles of the Pelvis grow. The sympathetic nervous system helps keep urine in by relaxing, while the parasympathetic nervous system encourages pee to flow.

Sometimes the bladder muscles don't respond to a lot of urine. A sudden urge to pee can be caused by this contraction. According to the Mayo Clinic, there are a number of underlying causes of overactive bladder. There are a number of remedies used to treat bladder problems.
