The WIRED world of culture is covered in The Monitor, a weekly column.

It can feel like you woke up in the wrong part of the multiverse. For example, take Wednesday. It was just hours after the premiere of Top Gun that word came out that the sequel had received a standing ovation. Five minutes! At the festival! I'm sure the movie is a hoot, but seeing the crowd at a prestigious French film festival salute a film series that is still something of a sizzle reel for American imperialism is surprising. The festival gave Tom Cruise, a guy people love taking potshots at. What is happening?

This is not to say that I don't like Top Gun or Tom Cruise. I don't think anyone at the festival cares about the public perception of who they choose to fete. It's mind-blowing to wake up in a world where the sequel to my favorite movie when I was 10 years old is getting rapturous applause at a festival. Top Gun! The original movie was called an allegory for homosexuality by the man. It's a compliment. I'm fine with living on.

It's also so flabbergasting because of that. Top Gun is an entertaining and heartbreaking movie. There was nothing that could inspire people to be Navy pilots. That is what the filmmakers and the US government wanted. Tony Scott was the one who directed it. It's hard to follow something that's ingrained in pop culture. Anticipating its sequel can be difficult, wanting something that will never live up to expectations. Fans want to like things, but fearing their failure can lead all of us to look out for them.

The first trailer for She-Hulk, a new show from Disney+, was released this week. She-Hulk had a lot to live up to, but it seems like it's unfulfilled. The new series is based on the comic books of the same name and is about a lawyer who is green. She-Hulk: Attorney at Law is the full title. It has a mix of comedy and action and has Mark Ruffalo as Smart Hulk. This should be good. According to the trailer, someone took the script for Ally McBeal and added science. There is an extended scene about She-Hulk. When you're green, amirite, turban is tough. Trailers can cram in everything, but it looks bad.
