As I lay in bed spooning my wee robot, one hand on its gently undulating belly as it slows my breathing, I was struck by the memory of co-sleeping with my kids when they were babies. It's comforting to share your bed. Research shows that we report better sleep when we share a bed. My sleep partner plays soothing rain sounds and does not need a bottle at 3 am.

Somnox 2 is a torso designed to slowly slow your breathing as you unconsciously match its rhythm. It can help you calm down by adjusting your breathing rate. A speaker that plays nature sounds is boosting its power. You can use an app on your phone to make changes.

Four years have passed since the original Somnox was created, and an improved model has been in the works. The new version has a larger breathing area, longer battery life, and an improved speaker. The $600 price tag is much harder to swallow than a sleeping pill because of the other major upgrades coming soon.

Sleep well.

Somnox 2 is less than 4 pounds and is over 12 inches long. It is covered in a soft fabric with memory foam underneath and has a simple control panel to turn it on or off. A pneumatic system inside fills and empties an air bladder in a simulation of breathing. It's easy to cuddle, spoon, or rest a hand on.

There are a variety of breathing exercises in the Somnox app. You can use the bot to help you relax during the day, but it's only for helping you sleep at night. If you hold it against your body, it will adjust to your breathing rate and help you to take longer and deeper breaths, which will make it easier to sleep. A proprietary algorithm is used to achieve this.

I relaxed and fell asleep faster with Somnox 2 than without the default settings. Somnox starts at a breathing pace of 12 breaths per minute. The exhale is twice as long as the inhale because it uses a standard ratio. You can change the breathing intensity of your sleep bot if you feel the need.

The latest version of Somnox had input from sleep experts and scientists. A clinical trial will be published later this year. The impact of controlled breathing on our ability to relax is not in doubt. You don't need a $600 robot to do it. There are many apps that can help. Many sleep gadgets and apps offer the same array of sounds and sounds.

It is nice to cuddle up to someone in bed, but the presence is all that makes Somnox unique. It's questionable whether that's enough to justify the high price.

It was a dream of Dystopia.

It did not help me stay awake. The Withings Sleep Tracking Pad showed no change in the average duration or quality of my sleep. I woke up with a dead weight next to me. It would fall out of my bed when I turned in to sleep.

We had connection issues with the original Somnox, and I was disappointed to find that its successor, though more reliable, still sometimes fails to connect to the app for no apparent reason. It's annoying that I have to tap through a connection process every time I open the app.

The Somnox 2 only plays one program at a time, so you can only set your sleep program once. You have to make selections in the app and send them to Somnox to change it. The process takes longer than it should.
