John Fetterman raised more than $1 million in a day after winning the Democratic primary for the open Senate seat in Pennsylvania.
Fetterman was off the campaign trail in the final days of the primary after he suffered a stroke. On the day of the election, he had a successful surgery.
Fetterman thanked his supporters from the bottom of his heart.
CNBC asked the Fetterman campaign for more detail about the donations.
The winner of the Republican Senate primary will face off against Fetterman in the general election.
The top two candidates, ex-hedge funder Dave McCormick and celebrity doctor Mehmet Oz, are locked in a close race that appears to be headed for a recount. Both campaigns predicted that they would win.
Fetterman won every county in Pennsylvania for the Democrats, NBC News projected, because of his laid-back style and populist politics.
According to NBC, he defeated his nearest rival in the primary by nearly 33 percentage points.
Fetterman's campaign had almost two million dollars in cash on hand at the end of April. The FEC data show that Fetterman had raised more than $16 million.
The race to fill the seat being left by GOP Sen. Pat Toomey could prove to be one of the most important fights of the year. Democrats are trying not to lose control of the Senate, which is evenly split between 50 Republicans and 50 senators who caucus with Democrats, while Vice President Kamala Harris holds a tiebreaking vote.
The best chance for Democrats to flip a red seat is in the Pennsylvania Senate race.
The party was behind Fetterman. In a statement Tuesday night, President Joe Biden said that the Democrats are united around John.
Fetterman understands that working class families in Pennsylvania and across the country have been dealt out for a long time.
