New York Mets right-handed pitcher Max Scherzer is expected to be out for six to eight weeks after straining his oblique during his start against the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday.
With two outs in the sixth, Scherzer took himself out of the game after he felt a twinge in his left side.
I felt a zing on my left side and knew I was done.
The three-time Cy Young Award winner threw 61 of his 87 pitches for strikes and left with a 6-2 lead against his hometown team. After signing a three-year, $130 million contract with the New York Mets, Max Scherzer was credited with the win in the 11-4 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The Mets have had several pitchers hit the injured list. Jacob deGrom has yet to make a start this season due to a shoulder injury suffered in spring training and Tylor Megill has been placed on the injured list with bicep tendinitis.
Mets manager Buck Showalter said on Thursday that Max was dealing with blisters on his hand.
Showalter said that he was struggling with his breaking ball because he was trying to keep it from ripping open again.
Chris Bassitt, Carlos Carrasco, and Taijuan Walker are the other members of the rotation.
In three starts and one relief appearance for the Mets this season, and in three starts at Triple-A, the left-handed pitcher has a 1-2 record with a 4.02 earned run average.
