You know you're in for a ride when a trailer starts with a needle drop. The members of the Umbrella Academy didn't emerge into the exact right year after they got the suitcase to go back to 2019. Today's latest glimpse gives us a better idea of what to expect.
The gang ended up at the Sparrow Academy, an alternate-timeline establishment, as the season finale showed. We get some great moments between the adopted siblings as they figure out what the hell is going on as they orient themselves in not-the-Umbrella Academy. The kind of moments that I love to see in The Umbrella Academy are when Five states that the next person to say dickhead. Diego immediately suggests killing them while Five is trying to tell his brothers to avoid their alternate-timeline selves, and Five is explaining that even if Reginald didn't adopt them, they still exist.
The official synopsis for season three is as follows: After putting a stop to 1963, the Umbrella Academy return home to the present, convinced they prevented the initial apocalypse and fixed this godforsaken timeline. They realize things aren't exactly how they left them after a brief moment of celebration. The Sparrow Academy is where you can enter. The Sparrows are smart, stylish, and warm, but they clash with the Umbrellas in a violent face-off that turns out to be the least of everyone's concerns. Negotiating challenges, losses, and surprises of their own, and dealing with an unidentified destructive entity wreaking havoc in the Universe, all they need to do is convince Dad's new and possibly better family. Will they be able to return to their pre- apocalyptic lives? Is this new world going to reveal more than just a hiccup?
This is the kind of family dynamic that I like to see on The Umbrella Academy. It was full of a kind of familiarly absurd dialogue. The season looks like it's going to be a fun, pop-fueled roller coaster from start to finish.
The third season of The Umbrella Academy will be available on June 22.
