It's amazing to think how far aviation has come in a century. The Wright Brothers set a world record for flying
I wanted to make a post about some of the airplane amenities that I like the most. I figured I'd share nine of my favorite airplane amenities, or at least some of them.
In no particular order, here we go.
There is something special about having a double bed on a plane. You can have that in Singapore Airlines. Two sets of seats can be combined to make a double bed. That is cool.
I don't usually get excited about taking a shower, except when flying. Passengers in the first class of the A380 can take showers. I've been fortunate to shower on the A380 many times, yet each time I still get giddy, as showering at 35,000 feet never gets old.
I think the new Boeing 777 first class is the best first class product in the world, as the cabin has six fully enclosed first class suites. The two center suites have virtual windows, which is the most ridiculous aspect of these seats.
Since they are in the middle of the cabin, they don't have real windows, but rather have virtual ones. I think I prefer virtual windows over real windows. It's partly for novelty and partly for the other benefits, such as being able to make the suite 100% dark.
I think that Emirates does amenities and gimmicks really well, even though it is getting a lot of love here. In first class, you should expect good service, but it is not always the case.
While most airplanes have call buttons at each seat, the new Boeing 777 first class gives passengers the option to order room service via their tablets. You can even video call the crew in the galley.
Business class and first class customers can enjoy a bar on the upper deck of the A380s. You can enjoy drinks while mingling with other passengers.
I thought I would mention the offer of Qatar Airways, since they have a bar on the A380s.
Korean Air has a different approach to onboard bars than other airlines. There is a big lounge area in the back of the Korean Air A380 business class cabin, which has seating and lots of bright lights. It's odd that you can't order most drinks here, but just some signature cocktails.
There is no greater example of that in the airline industry than EVA Air's Hello Kitty flights, which operate select frequencies in some markets. Everything about the experience is Hello Kitty themed, from the flight attendant uniforms to the food, to the toilet paper.
Most of the long haul planes of All Nippon Airways and Japan Airline have toilets that come with a toothbrush. This isn't just in first class, but also in the economy. This is as close as you can get to showering on a plane.
I don't think I'd call it a cool amenity, but it is a unique one that sets Saudia apart. There is a prayer room in the back of the cabin. This isn't a significant investment from the airline because they are constantly trying to maximize how efficiently space is utilized.
The airline experience has changed a lot over the years, and now there are some things that would not have been possible in the past. There are many cool experiences that can be had in the air.
