Every year, the same laptops get updated and, in most cases, they are simply refreshed with the latest chips from Intel,AMD, or Nvidia. If you purchased the previous model, there is not much you can do, but look on in envy at the more powerful new versions, waiting until it is time to upgrade again.

Unless you bought the laptop.

The Framework Laptop is a modular notebook that can be upgraded, not replaced. It's essentially a functioning Lego kit, an entirely user-serviceable laptop with swappable parts.

The new Framework laptop has a few key upgrades, including 12th Gen Intel Core processors. Framework is making a swappable Intel 12th Gen mainboard available to all customers, even those who purchased the first-gen model.

Next-Level Sound can be experienced.

Theater-like sound surrounds you with spatial audio with dynamic head tracking.

If you want to install the 12th Gen model on your old laptop, you can remove the 11th Gen mainboard. You can get a performance boost without buying a new laptop. The Framework Laptop now supports specific Intel Core i7-1280P, i5-1240P, and i7-1260P CPUs.

Framework listened to customer feedback and made a more sturdy version of the 12th GenCPU module using a full CNC process instead of aluminum forming. The Framework Laptop owners can upgrade their system without having to buy a new one if they buy the more rigid cover.

Framework is selling an upgrade kit that will give your laptop a performance boost with Intel 12th Gen and make it more sound by installing the reinforced lid. Framework showed an expansion card made with a controller. It will be available later this year.

The proof that Framework can make good on its promises is here. By making individual components available to customers, the company avoids the tradition of selling products to customers and forgetting about them so they can purchase a similar product a few years later.

The question is whether giving customers the choice to buy parts is financially viable. I hope so. If I asked myself if Framework Laptop owners should upgrade to 12th Gen Intel chips, the answer would probably be no. Most people are fine with using the previous-gen chips. It might be time to upgrade in a few years if Framework is still doing its job.
