In the most recent trailer, a new big bad was teased in the form of Vecna, a powerful lich from D&D, who is ready to prey on the people of Hawkins, Indiana. There has been a glimpse of Eleven and Will missing their friends while trying to adjust to life in California, far away from the traumatic events they both endure.

io9 took part in a roundtable with the young cast of the show to discuss what it was like growing up on the show with their audience and what it was like to return to portray their characters.

How are Eleven and Will doing in California?

Next-Level Sound can be experienced.

Theater-like sound surrounds you with spatial audio with dynamic head tracking.

The themes of the show are about kids who must constantly step up to face horrors that just won't stop. The cast is aware of the time they have been away from their young audience. Noah Schnapp, who plays the survivor of the Upside Down's first season threat, remained very active through his YouTube channel. So much time has passed, so he spoke about the awareness the family has of the story. The Duffer Brothers do a great job of telling the time that has passed, but also moving forward.

The Byers family relocated to California in case anyone were to go after them in connection to the events of last season, after Joyce took in Eleven as part of her family. It was nice to see our characters out of that environment. Eleven is more dependent on her friends. She is also trying to find out who she is without Mike.

El and Will get a break from the supernatural, at least from the looks of this season's opening, but not so much from the horrors of high school. We have all the supernatural stuff in our head. The high school stuff is real and it's something that everyone goes through. Will is an over protective brother to El this season, because of her struggles in high school.

Brown is excited to dive into Eleven's personal journey of finding the power within to accept herself and overcome the limits put on her, even though it is heavily implied that her character gets a call to save the world again. She is getting older. Brown said that the kids are getting older and growing up. They are searching for who they are. It's nice to allow them to do that this season.

The show is important for fans because it advocates for the importance of youth having not just the space to come into their own but having supportive friends to face high school and the end of the world. Everyone in our show is struggling with something, whether it's supernatural or natural, and it's understandable to fans across the world.

What’s going on with the kids in Hawkins?

Sadie Sink as Max in Stranger Things in front of a tombstone

The supernatural just doesn't let up. A string of deaths keeps the town in fear and brings together friends who had been apart since Starcourt. Max, who has been isolating herself and is still engulfed in grief over losing her brother, begins to see things first as the deaths begin, becoming the center of the horror this time around. That's something Sink is familiar with, having recently starred in Fear Street. The trailer shows Max facing off with Venca. A lot of it is related to getting into the mindset of Max and crafting like my performance this year.

Max and Lucas, who start the season very separated, come into the forefront of the events unfolding in Hawkins. In the first episode we see Lucas cope by throwing himself into becoming part of the popular crowd, which further divides him from his closest friends Mike andDustin. McLaughlin gave some insight that Lucas may not be as happy with his new life as he thinks. McLaughlin said that he doesn't think he wants to dive into the new, cool-guy jock thing. You have to step outside of the box to see and appreciate the person that you are.

Sink said that being a teen is complicated and informed why Max cut off all her friends. She is feeling lost and in a lot of pain because of the changes that have been caused by that. The way that Max deals with that is trying to keep it to herself. It's sad to see her close herself off from people who want to help her. She's stubborn.

The show has a factor of horror because of the explorations of the deaths of the youth. The town reacts by going full Satanic Panic, with Mike andDustin's new D&D dungeon master Eddie Munson becoming a prime suspect. Lucas has dealt with a lot of supernatural events, but now he is dealing with himself. McLaughlin said that he felt that because of the separation this season, he was like, "All right, what can I do?" He is trying to figure out what he can do for himself. A lot of people can relate to that. It is pretty realistic. Lucas had to mature faster than the average teenager because he dealt with unworldly things. It's life. Lucas will be fine. He is going to get through it.

Even though we don't know how things will shake out, it seems highly likely that no matter how long they've been there, they'll still show up. Young adults are ready to fight back when the fate of the world is at stake.

The first two episodes of the season will be released on May 27 and July 1.
