The third highest score in the history of the Indian premier league was claimed by Quinton de Kock, who was the coach of the Kolkata Knight Riders.
De Kock smashed 10 fours and 10 sixes from 70 balls as the Lucknow Super Giants posted a 210-0 score.
The first opening pair to bat in an IPL game were De Kock and KL Rahul, who made 68 not out from 51.
Kolkata lost by two runs in the final over.
ChrisGayle and New Zealand's McCullum bettered the score of South Africa's De Kock in an IPL match.
In the first match of the 2008 edition of the Indian premier league, ChrisGayle hit a 175 for Royal Challengers Bangalore, and in the first match of the 2013 edition, he hit 158 for KKR.
Lucknow gets one of the four play-off places while Kolkata misses out as they can't finish higher than sixth.
The first Test against New Zealand is on 2 June, so it is a good time for McCullum to join up with England.
Within the first three overs, KKR lost both of their openers, but regrouped as Nitish Rana scored 42 and captain Shreyas Iyer hit 50.
The power-hitting of Rinku Singh and Sunil Narine put Kolkata on the verge of an incredible chase after Iyer's dismissal.
With two balls left, KKR needed three runs to win, but Marcus Stoinis removed Singh and Umesh Yadav with the final two deliveries to seal victory and finish with figures of 3-23.
