The United States reopened its embassy in Kyiv on Wednesday, three months after moving its diplomatic operations to Poland due to Russia's invasion.
The Secretary of State said that the US had resumed operations in the Ukrainian capital.
The U.S. has enhanced its security measures and protocols to ensure the safety of American diplomats, and pledged to support the people of Ukraine.
consular operations will not resume immediately after a few diplomats return to Kyiv, according to embassy spokesman Daniel Langenkamp.
The return comes after several countries, including France, Italy and the United Kingdom, resumed operations in Kyiv over the past month after Russian troops failed to capture the capital.
Two weeks ago, American diplomats returned to the western Ukrainian city of Lviv, saying they hoped to return to their original home of Kyiv by the end of May. The U.S. first closed down its embassy in Kyiv on February 14 and then relocated its staff to Poland three days before the Russian invasion began. Kvien, the highest-ranking American diplomat in the country, said she wanted to send a message to Russia. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and Senate Minority LeaderMitch McConnell traveled to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
