The pace of votes being counted in Pennsylvania's GOP Senate primary is slow, but former President Donald Trump is already suggesting that it is because of a conspiracy to rob his preferred candidate of a win.
Trump lamented the slow pace of vote counting in a series of statements on his Truth Social platform. It makes it harder for them to cheat with the ballots they just found.
He made no claims of voter fraud, as Oz said Tuesday night that neither campaign would be able to assert victory as votes were still being counted.
At 1:30 p.m. Oz led former hedge fund CEO David McCormick by 31.1% to 31.1%, with about 2,400 votes separating the two and more than 85% of the estimated vote total counted.
Most of the uncounted votes are from mail-in ballots, which have favored McCormick so far in the vote tally.
An automatic recount will be triggered if the final margin of victory is less than.05%.
Many of the outstanding ballots are in Lancaster County, where election officials said a printing issue prevented 22,000 mail-in ballots from being scanned. A team of volunteers has been working to correct a code on the ballots to allow them to be counted. WGAL-TV reported Wednesday. Election officials think it could take until Friday to count the remaining ballots. In Lancaster County, Kathy Barnette won the election day vote with 31.3% of the ballots, followed by Oz at 26.7% and McCormick at 27.1%.
The Pennsylvania GOP Senate election was seen as the marquee contest in the busiest day of the election season. Trump wanted to reestablish his status as a GOP kingmaker with strong performances from his endorsed candidates. The most high-profile races of the night delivered mixed results for the former president, who claimed Wednesday that his candidates had a "spectacular evening of voting and winning." The North Carolina GOP Senate primary and Pennsylvania GOP gubernatorial primary were both won by Trump-endorsed candidates. The most shocking result of the night was from North Carolina, where scandal-plagued, Trump-backed Rep. Madison Cawthorn lost to state Sen. Chuck Edwards in a GOP House primary. Cawthorn was a pariah to Republican House leadership because he was a vocal backer of Trump.
Pennsylvania was one of several states where Trump tried to overturn the results of the 2020 election, claiming widespread voter fraud robbed him of winning the state. It was one of five states that Trump lost in 2020.
The votes are still being counted after a mail-in ballot printing error.
