The football coach at Ohio State, Ryan Day, will have a two-year extension.
The deal will increase Day's compensation from $8.6 million to $9.3 million per season. His base salary will be $2 million.
Lincoln Riley and Brian Kelly were paid a lot to leave Oklahoma and Notre Dame. Mel Tucker and James Franklin got new deals to ward off any other offers.
Day's old salary made him a bargain in this market.
Losing to Michigan and not being in the College Football Playoff put a damper on Ohio State's 2021 season, but the year ended with a Rose Bowl victory over Utah.
Day has kept the heights the Buckeyes enjoyed under Urban Meyer. They are 31-4 in his three full seasons as head coach, and he went three times without losing a game.
OSU turned over its coaching staff in the wake of falling short of expectations, most notably hiring Jim Knowles from Oklahoma State to serve as defensive coordinator. The last time the Buckeyes hired four new assistants without changing their head coach was in 1994.

It is difficult to imagine Day leaving Ohio State for another school, but the NFL could be a very real threat.
