The decision to bring the circus back without animals sends a very clear message to the industry that the circus can dazzle audiences with willing human performers and that no animal needs to be exploited.

Key Background

Elephants, tigers, and lions were part of the act for a long time. As the show got older, so did the anger from animal rights groups and activists. Some states banned the use of elephants in performances in 2016 as a result. In addition to issues with the animals, dwindling ticket sales, high railroad costs and high interest in digital entertainment led to the show's downfall. The chairman and CEO of the company that owns the circus said at the time that it wasn't relevant to people in the same way. It was reported in October that the show could return without animals.
