In the first war crimes trial since Russia invaded the country in February, a Russian soldier pleaded guilty to killing an innocent civilian.
Vadim Shishimarin was accused of killing a Ukrainian man in the Sumy region four days into the invasion.
He said that Shishimarin was guilty of war crimes and premeditated murder when asked if he was guilty.
Shishimarin was charged with violating the laws and customs of war, and faces up to life in prison for shooting the man in the head with a rifle from an open window of a car.
Russian soldiers did not want Shishimarin to be able to report them to Ukrainian military authorities because he was talking on his phone.
The man died on the scene when he was pushing a bicycle on the side of the road.
