Heading into the final day of the season, the Reds are still in the running for the title after they came back from a goal down to win at Saints.

The Reds fell behind to an early Nathan Redmond goal, knowing that a defeat would hand the title to Manchester City. The team clicked into gear after the break as goals from Takumi Minamino and Joel Matip either side of the break sealed a vital win that took them to within a point of leaders City.

All 20 teams will play at the same time on Sunday in the final round of the season, with City knowing that they must either equal or better the result at Villa to be crowned league champions. City will retain their title with a victory over Villa. The fight went right to the wire again, with the Reds pushing them all the way to the finish.

This will be the ninth time that the title has been decided on the final day of the season. Of the eight previous title chases that have gone the distance, the team at the top of the league at the start of the day have never been overtaken by a challenger.

1995-96

The 1995-96 campaign ended with Manchester United leading the way after missing out the previous year. Manchester United needed to beat Spurs in their final league game of the season to make sure of landing the first of the three trophies they were after. The title was won by United by a single point, as they beat Spurs at Old United and the Gunners beat Villa. The single-season haul was capped by wins in the finals of the FA Cup and the Champions League.

2007-08

It was Manchester United who led the way over the course of the season, although they were 17 goals better off than their opponents. The Blues had to win against the Trotters and hope that United didn't capitulate against Wigan Athletic. However, Ferguson's side cantered to a straightforward 2-0 win, while the Blues had to settle for second place behind United for a second year in a row. The two sides met again in the final of the European club competition in Moscow, with United once again prevailing on penalties.

2009-10

This time, the roles were reversed as the final day of the season approached with a precarious lead over Manchester United. The last game of the season for United was a whitewash of Potters at Old United, but Carlo Ancelotti's side put on a show by hammering Wigan 8-0 to win the title and set a number of new records.

The most famous title decider of all time was when Manchester City scored two goals in the last game of the season to beat neighbours Manchester United and win the title. As the clock wound down on the City game, they were down to their last chance to keep the pressure on, and they were beaten by two late goals from Edin Dzeko and Sergio Aguero.

2013-14

After losing the title to United in the previous season, Manchester City were looking to win it back and protect their lead over their rivals. With two weeks to go in the title race,Liverpool had been leading the race with two games to go, but they had lost to both Crystal Palace and Chelsea in back-to-back games, allowing City to overtake them. The Reds did everything they could by beating nine-man Newcastle, but City won the trophy by beating West Ham.

2018-19

Manchester City were once again leading the pack as the title battle between the two giants of English football went the full distance. The Reds had won nine in a row before their final game against Wolves, which they won 2-0. City ended their season with a 14th-straight victory, a 4-1 thumping of BRIGHTON & HOCKEY, to lift the title in style and celebrate on the south coast.
