  • A new bug is preventing users from setting up new or restored Chromebooks.
  • The bug appears when reaching the Google Play Terms of Services page in the setup process.
  • There's no official fix for the issue yet, but there are a couple of workarounds.

We are big fans of both Chrome OS and Chromebooks around these parts, but that doesn't mean the platform isn't flawed. Features that should have already been available are being implemented, along with a few that you wouldn't expect.

The last thing you want to deal with is a random bug when setting up a Chromebooks after a Powerwash or out of the box. It seems that is exactly what is happening to some users, as first reported by Android Police. You might not be able to get past the terms of service screen when you go through the initial setup process.

Something went wrong when users in the r/ChromeOS community reached the screen. It is even more frustrating that there is no mention of what is wrong. There is only one description offered when the error page is not loaded. Click the button if you want to return to the same place as before.

After entering Developer Mode, we ran into this issue on one of our Chromebooks that was going through a fresh setup. The issue was attributed to the fact that Developer Mode is buggy. After the Chromebook was back up and running, a simple forced restart was enough to get things back to normal.

A user in the Chromebook Support Forum was able to clear the issue by clearing the Play Services cache and data from their phone. They were able to finish setting up the Chromebook without any issues. This problem could be related to the installation of a Play Store update when you first try it out.

It's possible that it's related to Play Services and not the best Chromebooks or the best OS. We haven't seen an official response from the company yet, but they usually respond quickly to these kinds of bugs. We reached out to the internet search engine to see what was going on.
