An in-season tournament is being considered by the NBA as soon as the 2023-24 season.

The recent success of the play-in tournament has led the league to explore concepts for another competitive event, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic.

There was renewed enthusiasm for the creation of an in-season tournament according to Adrian Wojnarowski.

Negotiations have centered on an in-season tournament that would begin with pool play as part of the regular-season schedule before teams with the best records advance to an eight-team, single-elimination tournament that would conclude before Christmas, sources said.

In February, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said a new in-season tournament was on the horizon, but he noted that changes wouldn't be ready for next season.

I think we were moving closer to it, Silver said. There is a fair amount of interest.

The purpose of an in-season tournament is to break away from the monotony of the regular season. Silver believes that it would add excitement to the players and fans.

There are tournaments in other sports where players try to win a particular trophy. It is complicated.

The Commissioner's Cup is an idea that could be borrowed by the NBA. The leaders in each conference play in the Commissioner's Cup Championship Game if they win at least 10 of their games. The winner gets a large prize pool.
