According to the Associated Press, Doug Mastriano has won the Republican nomination for Pennsylvania governor, despite a reported last-ditch effort from state GOP officials who worry he's too extreme to win a general election.
The race was called by the AP at 9:51 pm. 45% of the vote was counted.
Lou Barletta had 22.6% of the vote, followed by Bill McSwain with 15.2%.
The Democratic nominee for governor in Pennsylvania is Josh Shapiro.
Wolf was unable to seek reelection due to term limits.
Donald Trump announced on Saturday that he was endorsing Mastriano, who had a large lead in the polls. Mastriano was one of Pennsylvania's loudest voices repeating Trump's false claims of widespread fraud in the 2020 presidential election, and was an attendee at Trump's "Stop the Steal" rally in Washington on January 6, 2021. One of the policies that some Republicans think make Mastriano too extreme to win a general election is that he will require every Pennsylvania voter to re-register. Several top Pennsylvania Republicans tried to prevent Mastriano from winning.
Do you think Ron DeSantis is good? The Florida governor is a favorite among right-wingers, according to NBC News, and Mastriano compared his conservative credentials to him at a recent rally.
According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, Mastriano attended an event last month that featured a video that claimed the 9/11 terrorist attacks were a false flag operation.
