The Kremlin's towers can be seen reflected in a window along with a yellow McDonald's sign.

McDonald's opened its first restaurant in Moscow in 1990 and has since served over 30,000 customers, but it will no longer do business in Russia. The company will either remove all of its brand elements, including its golden arches, from its 800+ locations across the country or begin the process of de-Arching. It expects to lose between $1 and $1.4 billion.

McDonald's announced on Monday that it was exiting the Russian market because of the humanitarian crisis caused by the war in Ukraine, and had begun to search for a local buyer for all of its restaurants in the country. The move from the American company comes after it decided to close its restaurants in the country after Russia invaded Ukraine.

McDonald's said in a press release that it was leaving Russia because of the war and the unpredictable operating environment.

Chris Kempczinski said that the company was proud of its 62,000 employees and hundreds of suppliers. The announcement was extremely difficult because of the loyalty of McDonald's employees and partners in Russia.

We must remain steadfast in our values because we can no longer keep the Arches shining there.
