Madison Cawthorn hasn't spent any money on local television ads in his bid to win the GOP primary Tuesday, lagging behind many of his rivals and facing opposition within his own party to retain his congressional seat.
According to data from Medium Buying, Cawthorn's campaign spent over $150,000 on cable spots in the run up to the primary. His campaign has spent $13,000 on radio spots. Cawthorn has been accused of possible insider trading and calling the Ukrainian President a fascist as his country faces an invasion by Russia.
A recent survey shows a decline in the number of people who would vote for Cawthorn in the primary. Cawthorn's campaign had just over $137,000 on hand at the end of May. Donald Trump called on voters to give Madison a second chance in a post on his Truth Social account.
A representative for Cawthorn didn't return a request for comment.
The race for Cawthorn's House seat has received the endorsement of North Carolina Republican Sen. Thom Tillis. Medium Buying's data shows that the campaign has spent over $400,000 on campaign ads. Results for NC, a super PAC aligned with Tillis, has spent over $1 million on television ads, with most of the airtime devoted to opposing Cawthorn and backing Edwards.
Contributions aren't capped and they can spend unlimited amounts of money on a single issue or campaign if the candidate doesn't directly control how the funds are spent.
Ryan Salame, co-CEO of FTX Digital Markets, a subsidiary of FTX, is one of the big money donors to the PAC. The nonprofit doesn't reveal their donors.
According to Americans for a Balanced Budget's website, Douglas Stewart was the finance director of the North Carolina Republican Party and the chief of staff to congressman Patrick McHenry.
