USA Today and Sportico reported on Krzyzewski's compensation earlier Tuesday, and the university gave Forbes the filing.

The $13.7 million includes a base salary of $4.7 million, incentives of $2 million, and deferred compensation of $7.2 million, according to the filings, and USA Today reports that the total includes about 1.3 million in previously reported compensation.

USA Today began tracking the metric in 2006 and found that Krzyzewski's compensation was the highest ever for a college coach not connected to a contract buyout.

Krzyzewski, who retired in April after four decades at the helm of Duke's men's basketball program, made over four times more than the next highest-paid Duke employee.

In a statement to Forbes Krzyzewski's pay reflects his status as the most successful college basketball coach in history.

One of the greatest basketball coaches of all time, Krzyzewski won five national titles at Duke and is the all-time leader in wins for a college basketball coach. The 75-year-old announced his retirement last June and his career at Duke ended last month when his team lost to North Carolina in the NCAA tournament semifinals.
