The New York Yankees starting pitcher has taken down his account on social media after a decade ago he used racial slurs.
According to the report, he didn't use the words to demean anyone directly, but he was quoting rap lyrics in some of the posts.
When speaking to reporters on Monday before the Yankees game against the Baltimore Orioles, Cortes apologized for his previous comments.
When I was 17 years old, I felt like it was not the right message to send. I deleted my account to clean it up.
It is not acceptable. I think I could have said things differently. I am here today to say that I will work on it and fix it.
One of the best pitchers in the majors so far this season is Cortes. In seven starts, he has a 2-1 record with a 1.35 earned run average. He has thrown 49 strikeouts against just 11 walks and a 0.85 WHIP.
He tries to use social media as a way to inspire people, but he is disappointed in himself. He said he will be reactivating his account soon.
Cortes hopes to be back in the next few days. For the last two or three years, I have been pretty positive on social media. I was a little angry at myself when I saw that.
