The court in Santa Clara County, California, denied bail for the second time on Monday in the attempted murder case against former UFC champ Cain Velasquez.
Judge Shelyna Brown denied the bail for a second time because of thereckless disregard for human life of Velasquez.
The retired UFC great was arrested in February. A plea hearing is scheduled for June 10.
The man is being charged with attempted murder. If he is convicted, he could face 20 or more years in jail.
According to the Santa Clara County district attorney, Velasquez shot a gun into the vehicle of Goularte, who was being charged with molesting a young relative. Paul Bender was in the vehicle and was hit by one of the bullets. He did not suffer life-threatening injuries.
At the hearing on Monday, he spoke via video call and said that he has been unable to work since the shooting because of an injury to a nerve in his shoulder.
In what the district attorney described as a "11-mile high-speed chase" through San Jose, Velasquez is accused of following Goularte's truck in his own vehicle. The truck was rammed and a handgun was fired into it. Goularte and his mother were in the truck.
Goularte is being charged in Santa Clara County with a lewd or lascivious act on a child under the age of 14. A plea hearing is scheduled for June 6.
Goularte was released from custody without bail. He was ordered to stay in home confinement, remain 100 yards away from any child under the age of 14 and wear an electronic monitoring bracelet.
According to a court document, the child told police that Goularte touched him in the bathroom of the day care center. The child said that Goularte said not to tell anyone what happened and that this instance had happened 100 times.
Goularte denied any wrongdoing. Goularte lives in the building where the day care center is located.
