New York Governor Kathy Hochul wants social media companies to do more to combat hate speech after the mass shooting at a Buffalo supermarket that killed 11 people. Speaking at a news conference on Saturday night, Hochul called out social media companies for not doing enough to monitor racist, anti-immigrant, and antisemitic content posted on their platforms, and suggested that they establish a system that notifies authorities of online content that could be deemed dangerous. The governor wants to meet with these companies soon to discuss what can be done to hold them accountable. I want them to sit in the room, look me in the eye, and tell me to make sure that you are monitoring this content the second it hits your platform. I want to know if there is anything else that can be done. The 18-year-old white male suspect in the shooting was live streamed on the platform. The video was taken down after it showed the shooter's point of view, but he was still able to open fire on people. The 13 people shot were all killed in one of the worst shootings in recent history. The white supremacist theory known as the "great replacement theory" warns that White people are being replaced in America by minorities. The theory was used as part of a campaign by a Republican Congresswoman. Next-Level Sound can be experienced. Theater-like sound surrounds you with spatial audio with dynamic head tracking.
The 18-year-old claimed in the manifesto that he was radicalized on the internet during the early days of the epidemic, and that he began researching low birth rates for White people in order to replace the Europeans. The shooter chose the Tops supermarket in Buffalo because it has the highest black population percentage, according to the manifesto.
We don't know if there are other people who are going to be inspired, which is exactly what this cruel depraved person intended if you read the manifesto, he intended to make sure that other people would see it.
Hochul's comments come amidst an ongoing debate over online censorship as members of the far-right express growing discontent with how social media platforms have been regulating their content. Musk has become the champion of free speech for republicans after he said he would buy the company. Musk refers to himself as a free speech absolutist, and his vision for the social media platform seems to include very little restriction on content.
Social media platforms are having a hard time keeping violent content off their sites. It took Facebook 17 minutes to take down a live streamed video of the New Zealand mosque attack. The Buffalo shooting video was taken down by twitch in about two minutes, but some argue that isn't enough.
The fact that innocent human beings could be executed and not be taken down within a second, says to me that there is a responsibility out there.
