The Golden Knights failed to make the playoffs for the first time in their short history and fired head coach Peter DeBoer.

The Vegas Golden Knights would like to thank Pete DeBoer for his commitment to the organization over the past three seasons. We believe that a new coach will put us in the best position to succeed next season, after lengthy discussions over the last two weeks.

DeBoer was the second coach hired by Vegas, after Gallant was behind the bench for the first two seasons in the NHL. In his three seasons in Vegas, DeBoer had a record of 98-50-12 but failed to make the Stanley Cup Final in both of them.

The Golden Knights missed out on the playoffs due to injuries and salary cap-related lineup challenges. The Knights had a late-season stretch that saw them get one win in six critical games, including a shootout loss at the Dallas Stars.

The Vegas Golden Knights made the Stanley Cup Final in their first season in the NHL. Bill Foley has been adding veteran talent in the hopes of winning a title. The Knights have one of the NHL's highest-salaried teams, whose cap number ballooned even larger when they made a blockbuster trade for Buffalo Sabres star Jack Eichel.

The team lost a little personality due to the roster moves that were necessitated by the salary cap, according to the Las Vegas Journal-Review.

Our goal is to get back to this identity of never giving up, never giving in and being a team. He said that they moved away from their identity with all the changes and constant machinations. That is a priority for me, and I will be involved in it.

Several high-profile coaches are looking for new jobs after Vegas fired its coach. Barry Trotz was the coach of the New York Islanders who beat the Knights in the Stanley Cup Final. It would be ironic if he ends up there because DeBoer was hired after the San Jose Sharks defeated Vegas in the playoffs.

Claude Julien, who won a Stanley Cup with the Boston Bruins, and Paul Maurice, who is seventh and eighth in all-time wins, are both seeking jobs.

Gary Bettman hadn't given Quenneville permission to return to the league as of last week.
